The primary function of cardiovascular system is to supply oxygen to other body organs. This is a very interesting system of human body and a lot of research has gone into its understanding. Here is a very brief description of the three parts: heart, blood and blood vessels.

Blood:

Blood provides the basic nutrition for the body and gives it energy to survive. Blood is a carrier. It supplies oxygen and nutrition to different organs and cells of our body. Some interesting features and facts of this vital component of human body can help having a better understanding of its functioning in the body.

Seven percent of our body weight comprises of blood. On an average an adult body has about five liters of blood. Blood is comprised of blood cells in liquid form that is called blood plasma. The blood cells are further divided into two categories. One is known as the red blood cells and the other is called white blood cells. The main constituent of red blood cells (RBC) is hemoglobin, a complex mixture of protein and iron. Blood has connective tissues and is produced in the bones.

Heart:

We all know that heart is the most vital part of our body. It is responsible for supplying oxygen and blood to the rest of the body parts. The weight of a male heart is nearly 300 to 350 grams, but the female heart weighs less, about 250 to 300 grams. It's too well known that the size of your heart equals that of your hand fist. The heart is protected by a double layer called sac-Pericardium.

Human heart has three major parts: Innermost layer (Endocardium), Middle layer (Myocardium) and the Uppermost layer (Visceral layer). Heart is further divided by four different chambers: two arteries and two ventricles.

Blood vessels:

Blood vessels are the carriers of blood to heart and to different organs of human body. The blood vessel in turn is categorized into three kinds: arteries, capillaries and veins, each performing a role in the functioning of the body. The veins perform the important function of carrying blood cells to heart whereas arteries take the blood away from the heart. The capillaries swap over chemicals with water. The biggest artery of the blood vessel which carries blood away from the heart is known as aorta.

You will really be amazed to learn the following scientific facts of your cardiovascular system. The normal heart beats for seventy two times in a minute, which will be more than one beat per second. The constitution of plasma is just eight percent of proteins; the rest of it all is water. The length of all blood vessels put together comes to almost sixty thousand miles.
